She sits on the rubble in her fuzzy bear t-shirt — a koala, maybe, the kind of thing a child picks because it is soft and a little silly — and her head tilts to one side, eyes cast downward. She is not performing anything. She is just sitting there, the way children sit when the world has gotten very heavy and nobody has asked them how they are. Hosam did not look away.

Jabbara (جبّارة) is an Arabic word meaning the one who endures — who repairs what is broken, who restores what was lost. It shares its root with Al-Jabbar, one of the names of God in Islam: the Mender of the fractured. It is a name for someone unbreakable.
